For every grade in this
style of TKD you are required to learn a set pattern of movements
which includes many of the techniques that you are expected to be
able to perform at that particular grade. On this page you will
find all the patterns (in word and picture forms),that are
required for gradings upto and including 1st Kup (black tag). Just click on the links below to review the pattern
All Patterns are set out as Step
Number, Move, Stance, and Technique. For your
easy reference.
(This page is mainly for
people that are already practising TKD and have already been
taught how to perform the movements. This page is purely to help
you practise and learn you pattern when you are not with your
instructor. This does page does not contain instructions on how
to perform each of the movements themselves.)
What is a pattern (Tul)?
A pattern is a set of basic defence and attack movements, set in a logical sequence to deal with one or more imaginary opponents. Patterns are an indication of a students progress - a barometer in evaluating an individuals technique. All the patterns below are explained using the english defintions to make it easier for you. For the gradings you would need to know the korean definitions which are taught as part of the training. For an translation of these terms click here.
Why do we perform patterns?
We practise patterns to improve our Tae Kwon-Do techniques, to develop sparring techniques, improve flexibility of movement, master body shifting, develop muscles, balance and breath control. They also enable us to acquire techniques that cannot be obtained from other forms of training.
THE
FOLLOWING POINTS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED WHEN PERFORMING PATTERNS
1
. Patterns should begin and end on the same spot. This is
an indication of the performers accuracy of the movements.
2. Correct posture and
facing must be maintained at all times.
3. Muscles of the body
should be tensed and relaxed at the proper critical moments in
the exercise.
4. The exercise should be
performed in a rhythmic movement with the absence of stiffness.
5. Each pattern should be
accelerated or decelerated according to instructions.
6. Each pattern should be
perfected before moving to the next.
7. Students should know the
purpose of each movement.
8. Students should perform
each movement with realism.
(Please note all the
movements in the patterns below are described using the Korean
Terminology which are learnt as part of the training. For an
explanation of these please see the Korean terms section below).

MEANING
OF PATTERN:
CHOONG-MOO
was the give name to the great Admiral Yi Sun-Sin of the Yi

He
was reputed to have invented the first armoured battleship (Kobukson)
which was the percursor of the present day submarine in 1592 A.D.
The reason why this pattern ends up with a left hand attack is to
symbolize his regrettable death, having no chance to show his
unrestrained potentiality checked by the forced reservation of
his loyalty to the King.
